After countless of hours of Youtube videos tutorials and grasping all the info, tips, steps etc; this morning, for the first time I truly felt that I was ready enough to give it a go!
Only watching and understanding what they are saying is not nearly enough, no matter how good the tutor is. I really need to give it a hands-on try and apply what I have learned and absorbed so far (and remember while doing so) to get the true experience.
For this portrait study, (initially) I am training my eyes to block out the large masses and shapes, and then blocking in more with smaller shapes within the large shapes, as I am used to eye-ing on details on the subject.
My initial large and medium block-ins worked for a while, until I overworked the piece which at that point I knew I had overshot, too far, too soon. My brain kept telling me to stop, but my hands kept wanting to go back in trying to fix and improve, and I did so knowingly until the time was up. Don’t forget that I am painting on a rather small square, 10cm x 10cm, that’s 4″ x 4″ (inch). There’s literally no space even for my smallest brush I have on hand!
I should have stopped when my brain asked me to. *guilty grin*
Perhaps I should focus on the first and second block-in stages for now and leave out the details until I feel that I am ready. And of course to listen to my instincts.
So dear readers, always listen to your instinct! ❤
